  1. RIVER RAID
  2. Your mission is to  score  as  many  points  as possible by destroying
  3. enemy battleships, helicopters, fuel depots, jets, land tanks, hot air
  4. balloons and bridges before your jet crashes or runs out of fuel.

  6. INITIAL SET-UP
  7.  
  8. 1. Load River Raid into your system.
  9.  
  10. 2. When loading is complete,  the  CONTROLLER  MENU will appear. Press
  11. the numerical key that corresponds to you selection.
  12.  
  13. 3. When the starting screen  appears,  select  game  level, 1 to 8, by
  14. pressing the corresponding numerical key.
  15.  
  16. 4. The keyboard screen will now appear, displaying all controls.
  17.  
  18. 5. Start the game by pressing  ENTER.  The action begins by moving the
  19. joystick or pressing a control key.
  20.  
  21. 6. Pause the game at any time by pressing H on the keyboard. To resume
  22. the action press it again.

  24. 7. To reset the game press CAPS SHIFT  and ENTER. To reset back to the
  25. controller menus, press SYMBOL SHIFT and ENTER.

  31. THE RIVER OF NO RETURN
  32. The river is divided into sections  with  a  bridge at the end of each
  33. section. You will encounter islands, narrow channels, bays and lots of
  34. enemy air, land and water crafts  moving  in  to block your path. Also
  35. the farther down the river you fly, the more harrowing things get.
  36.  
  37. The current bridge number is displayed  on-screen and is an indication
  38. of your progress up the  river.  it  is  updated  whenever a bridge is
  39. destroyed. Advanced  pilots  may  start  the  game  at  later bridges,
  40. bypassing the easier sections of the river. Here are your options:

  56. Your jet fighter will bank to  the  left  or  right when you move your
  57. joystick left or right. To accelerate  push  it forward. To slow down,
  58. pull it back.  Press  fire  to  launch  missiles  (hold for continuous
  59. fire).

  61. On the keyboard O is used to  move  left,  P to move right. Press 2 to
  62. accelerate, W to slow down. Any  letter  key  on the bottom row may be
  63. used as a fire button.

  87. YOUR SQUADRON
  88. You'll begin with four jets (one  active, three on reserve). With each
  89. 10,000 point increase, you're given an  additional jet. You lose a jet
  90. if it runs out of fuel, or touches anything except a fuel depot.
  91.  
  92. FUEL GAUGE
  93. Always keep an eye and an ear on your fuel gauge. Fuel is used up at a
  94. constant rate, regardless of  speed.  When  your  fuel drops below 1/4
  95. full, a warning sound  will  alert  you.  To  refuel,  fly over a fuel
  96. depot. The slower you fly  over  it,  the  more fuel you'll receive. A
  97. beep will sound while  you  are  refuelling.  This  changes to a higher
  98. pitch when your fuel tank is  full.  If  you  don't need fuel, you can
  99. blow up the fuel depot.

  101. LAND TANKS
  102. These appear on the road at the first bridge. Beginning with Bridge 7,
  103. they'll dodge up to  the  shoreline  and commence shooting. Helicopter
  104. gunners appear at Bridge 13.

  127. "The River of No Return is a rough assignment. You'll not only have to
  128. know your assault jet, but you'll  need  to  have  a good idea of your
  129. basic flight plan before you start."
  130.  
  131. "By  knowing  the   river,   pinpointing   areas   with   the  highest
  132. concentration of enemy, and the most  fuel  depots, you'll have a much
  133. better chance of surviving. Try jotting  down notes for each important
  134. section."

  136. "Fuel is a critical factor. When you're  far up river, fuel is scarce.
  137. Hence flying to the next fuel depot should be your top priority. Also,
  138. you'll find you can actually blow blow  up  a fuel depot in the middle
  139. of refuelling."
